Modular Matrix

Two months ago, I initiated a pioneering endeavor with the introduction of the ratchet strap + modular concept for our parklet. During a presentation to the West Ward, I culminated with a slide entitled ‘What if..?’—challenging the norms of conventional parklet design and encouraging a departure from conventional methodologies. By ingeniously integrating two seemingly disparate elements into a geometrically intricate yet elegantly simple modular configuration, we achieved a distinctive outcome. Our innovation manifested in dynamic seating arrangements featuring floating ratchet strap benches and movable seating cubes, fostering fluid social interaction outside the premises of Blue Berry Cafe in Newark, New Jersey. Notably, this establishment champions healthy living and dining through its menu offerings and positive community engagement—a narrative we sought to underscore through the vibrant color palette curated by our artist, Michael Dal Cerro.

The culmination of our efforts was nothing short of stunning, and the hands-on experience proved profoundly enriching. Engaging in physical construction and witnessing the realization of our vision in the tangible realm offered invaluable insights into the architectural process. It underscored the limitations of digital modeling, providing a nuanced understanding of materiality, spatial dynamics, and the intricate assembly process. This firsthand experience has undoubtedly broadened my perspective on architecture, informing my future endeavors with newfound depth and insight.
